Wedding Music Selection Guide
A walk through your day, one song at a time.
A great playlist isn’t built all at once — it comes together moment by moment. Here’s every point in the day where a song tends to matter, so you can decide where you have strong feelings and where you’re happy to let the floor take over.
This is a starting point, not a checklist. Every wedding leaves a few of these out, and that’s completely fine. Anywhere you don’t have a preference, your DJ can read the room and choose something that fits.
Ceremony
The first stretch of the day, and where music does its quietest, most emotional work. These moments tend to run in order.
- Prelude Softly in the background as guests find their seats.
- Officiant & groom entrance The walk that opens the ceremony.
- Family entrance Grandparents and parents seated.
- Bridal party entrance Attendants down the aisle.
- Bride’s entrance The one everyone turns around for.
- Recessional The celebratory walk back up the aisle.
Cocktail Hour
Usually 30 to 60 minutes as guests arrive at the reception, photos wrap, and the wedding party regroups. This one doesn’t need a song-by-song plan — hand your DJ a vibe and let them carry it. Think of it as the room’s warm-up.
Grand Entrance
The moment the celebration officially begins. Pick songs with a little momentum — this is the room’s first cheer of the night.
- Bridal party entrance The room’s first welcome.
- Bride & groom entrance Your entrance into the reception.
Traditional Dances & Moments
The heart of the reception. Include the ones that mean something to you and skip the rest — there are no rules about which you keep.
- First dance
- Father–daughter dance
- Mother–son dance
- Couples dance
- Anniversary dance
- Honeymoon dance Also known as the money dance.
- Ice breaker Bridal party dance to open the floor.
- Cake cutting
- Toasts
- Garter toss
- Bouquet toss
- Last dance
- Send-off The final note of the night.
Dance Floor
Once the formal moments are done, the night is yours. A little direction goes a long way — start by naming the overall vibe: dance-heavy, pop, hip-hop, oldies, or a mix of everything.
10–15 songs or genres you’d love to hear. Enough to point the night in the right direction — a full playlist is welcome too.
Anything you’d rather not hear. A short do-not-play list keeps the floor exactly where you want it.
Bring your notes to the table.
Your coordinator and DJ build the run-of-show around the moments that matter to you. Come with as much or as little as you like — we’ll shape the rest together.
